About the Privathotel
Lindtner and its history
80 years of Lindtner in Hamburg - on 1 August 2019, the gastronomic institution known far beyond the borders of Hamburg, Germany and Europe celebrated its 80th anniversary. A memorable anniversary, because it's not just the magic number 80 that gives cause for celebration, but above all the development and growth of this family business is a very special story.
On 1 August 1939, newlyweds Hermann and Alwine Lindtner opened a patisserie on Meßberg in Hamburg's city centre. The business was a hit with the people of Hamburg - until bombs hit the shop in 1943. The couple managed to escape from the burning city centre, but the confectionery, including the bakery and inventory, was lost.
After the war, the couple started a new beginning in the Eppendorf district of Hamburg, on Eppendorfer Landstraße. They wanted it to be a café in the classic style, with top-class furnishings and quality. This has remained true to this day. Constant modernisation in the technical area and careful adaptation to today's needs have never detracted from the charm of the guest rooms and the popularity with young and old.
The founding couple took a big step in 1949 with the construction of the Lindtner hotel restaurant in Heimfeld. Exactly 99 days passed from the laying of the foundation stone to the opening.
Three daughters, Heidrun, Brunhild and Korri, who now run the business together, were born in the meantime. In the years and decades that followed, the people of Harburg flocked to the house on the Schwarze Bergen, enjoying themselves with food and drink, music and dancing. Girls and boys celebrated their dances here in the Great Hall.
Das Lindtner has always been a popular address for graduation parties, wedding celebrations and anniversaries. The Harburg marksmen's guild from 1528 has its headquarters here. For many guests, the house with its still private atmosphere has become a second home.
Art at the Hotel
Faith. Love. Hope.
The lively atmosphere of a company is a stimulus and inspiration for guests and employees of the Privathotel Lindtner Hamburg. The release of creative energy is ultimately the prerequisite for safeguarding the company for future generations. In an environment dominated by rational processes, art exerts a special fascination:
It can reveal content, meaning and visions for the future. Art is an expression of creative power and creativity; it is a constant source of progress.
The art in our private hotel Lindtner Hamburg is intended to create that distance from rational processes without which creativity cannot develop. The guest should feel at ease and be able to develop new ideas and thoughts.
Our building is a cultural centre, showcasing the art and culture of our time, from the architecture and furnishings to the works and sculptures of contemporary artists. Today and in the future.
Vladimir Kamendy, born and raised in Bratislava and a Swede since the age of 20, a polyglot cosmopolitan and art teacher, was a gifted master of the language of colour, which he used with virtuosity, almost playfully.
Many of his works can be seen in the rooms and suites as well as in the public areas of our hotel and convey a universal intensity that has no equivalent in contemporary modernist painting. Almost all of his works were created here in his studio. The artist has been "at home" at the Privathotel Lindtner Hamburg since 1992 and has regularly spent a large part of the year here.
He died at the age of just 59 in 2014 in his studio in Berlin, right next to Checkpoint Charlie, which today serves as a museum documenting the overcoming of Germany's division.
His paintings tell of time and eternity, of faith, love and hope. Most of his works were created during the artist's annual "summer studio" in August, but also in New York, Venice and Basel.
We will honour his memory as a great artist of his time.
